Happy Birthday Tegan and Sara!!!

NEW BOOK. NEW RECORD. We’ve dubbed this VERY busy point in our lives, “The Era of the JEAN JACKET”. Get ready for a lot of denim after High School and Hey, I’m Just Like You come out. You’ve been warned.

We did 3 weeks of rehearsals in Vancouver before making So Jealous. We both had a bit of a meltdown trying to turn our demos into full band arrangements. Mostly because we knew exactly what we wanted to hear, but it took months for the sound in our heads to make it onto tape.

Looking back, So Jealous is when we really started to lean into pop—we added keyboards, we smoothed out our production, we set our sights on becoming a bigger band. But we kept enough rough edges and attitude to make it our own. Plus, we cut mullets. How popular did we really want to be?

The release of So Jealous transformed our lives, and we’re forever thankful for that. We’re so grateful for all of you who’ve been around since then. 15 years later that record still finds new ears which shocks and delights us. Thank you for loving So Jealous, and us.

Hey, we’re just like you…a little messed up and blue.

Lyric video directed by Sarah M Worden.

Tegan and I were dirtbags in high school. Stoned on acid, sneaking out, skipping school, lying to our parents. But we were also having the time of our lives. On acid, Tegan seemed like the funniest, coolest person in the universe. All the animosity and fighting melted away, and we were returned to the original joy of our friendship and delivered back into the wonder of our childhood. –Sara

The drab, flat, concrete sprawl of our adolescence came alive on acid. Teeming with unanswered questions about ourselves, Sara and I experimented as a way to unlock our clenched jaws; jaws wound tight with worry about the future that awaited us after we graduated; a future that felt as bright, and colorful, as the world we saw when we were stoned. After sitting for hours, cross-legged in Sara’s bedroom, we zig-zagged and cross-stitched our voices together, singing our dissimilar confessions to the tape recorder between us to write this song. Arriving at a tale of two sisters who were often at odds with each other, but just as often at ease in the company of the other. As it turns out, we are more alike than not. –Tegan

The Hey, I’m Just Like You Tour is coming to England! A very special tour that is like nothing we’ve ever done before. We’ll read stories from our memoir High School, perform new and classic songs, show archived video footage and of course go on tangents galore.

One of us is basking in the swishy, elastic-waisted glory of a color-blocked nylon tracksuit, and the other is, well…jealous. Taken at the I’ll Be Back Someday video shoot. Watch at TeganAndSara.lnk.to/IBBSVideo
